’44’

SD Video (silent), 44min, 2005

A video-work made on two-month journey to Antarctica, travelling with the British Antarctic Survey on their ice-breaking ship the Earnest Shackleton. The film lasts 44min and is made from 44 pieces of footage, from 44 days at sea – all shot through the same porthole on the Earnest Shackleton. ’44’ tells the story of a journey setting out from the Falkland Islands and travelling south into the increasingly surreal and ‘off-planet’ landscapes of Antarctica. The film then ends with the return journey to South Georgia another outpost of ‘civilisation’ within the Southern Ocean.
