In 2014 a concrete boat: ‘The Brioney Victoria’ was deliberately sunk off the southwest coast of England to create the artwork ‘REEF’ (see ‘related’ below). The sinking event was transmitted live as a video-performance, but also created a permanent artwork at the bottom of sea – an artificial reef that will evolve over the next hundred or thousand years. A month after the deliberate sinking of the small boat, a group of divers set out to document the boat now resting in her new home. However, the visibility was so bad that no usable images from the dive were gained – except for one self-portrait of the artist with his goggles and breathing apparatus temporarily removed so that he appears to be enacting the role of the ship’s captain. A ghost still standing within the wheelhouse of his small boat.
