Orly Aviv - Berlin Balloons Project

Orly Aviv - Berlin Balloons Project

IMGP2521IMGP2280IMGP2270_MG_6042_MG_5367Balloon  Project

The idea for the Balloon Project came from the specific location of Berlin Sculpture Park,

were the wall used to separate between west and east ,freedom and “capture”.

My work was done  with  Helium Balloons.
A still camera and a GPS  was connected to two big  yellow  helium balloons flying over the park.

The floating camera took , every minute ,one image, from up to down ,of the park.

My interest was to catch the different paths, people left crossing  the park.

The GPS record constantly  the vanishing paths, the balloons left at sky.

In the park , i  documented the balloon, and the handle from  two aspects.

First images and videos from down to up,of the balloons flying, especially in relation to the surrounding like  trees or buildings.

Second, the handle  which was the end of a 35 meter long rope, in relation to different objects in the park.

The Balloons project is  about personal relationship in freedom prism.

I would like to evoke questions related to the balance of freedom and “capture” in personal relationship.
Why people choose to loose their personal freedom for having personal relationship?
What people earn in relationship, which make them, give up on their own freedom?
What avoid people to fulfill their inherent  freedom?
People speak about their obligations, responsibilities, engagements, which are all true,
But in a way ,they are all different kinds of barrier ,obstacles which avoid them from maximize a basic need of  freedom.

The connected two balloons ,flying wherever the wind take them, are a metaphor for freedom.

Looking from above of past life paths, planing a brighten future.

The handle which was hold by different objects in the park,

played as a metaphor for different “captures”  of human life, obligations which people put themselves into,

in order to preserve constant steady relationship.

The research project will go on in the Slade-UCL -London sky.

border

1berlin map

i  travelled to the stations near the berlin border using the s bahn & u bahn system.

i  photographed the border facing towards the centre of berlin.

i  used  kodachrome 64 slide film from the 1980′s.

i  got very disorientated  and went slightly bonkers.

i  posted the film to kodak in switzerland, they then send it to a lab in kansas to be processed.

i will then convert it to digital when it arrives in the uk, and upload my findings to this blog on the worldwideweb.

i have put other photographs from my travels in berlin here…. http://www.flickr.com/photos/74629659@N00/sets/72157622658451960/

PSEUDO,PLAY [a.House, b.Science]: Claim X, Claim Y

My project is tentatively titled:
PSEUDO __________PLAY__________
[a. House, b. Science]

I am starting from the basis of two claims made by two groups (maybe two granfalloons) using the area: artists [Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum] and developers [Fellini].

Mobile Research Station Interior[CLAIM X]
“Construction has begun. On the central block of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum’s vacant lots, the foundations of a new apartment building have taken root. Floor by floor, the building emerges out of the ground and into the skyline. The building’s architectural style pays homage to past conceptions of the future. Its neighbor, a planned Italian enclave represented with a “Dolce Vita” model-house, comes straight out of an imagined re-creation of the past. Built one-year ago, the model-house has acquired an aged patina and no longer sticks out like a new shoe. In the front garden, oleander plants blend in harmoniously, joining in peace with the wild flowers and grass on the surrounding vacant lots. Due to a temperate Spring, the area is rich with flora and fauna. To enrich these unimaginative architectures with a more inspired impulse, Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum will complement the building activities with its new series Wunderland (Wonderland).”

Fellini Model Home Interior[CLAIM Y]
“Hardly any other metropolis in Europe has been so strongly influenced by Italy in its architecture as Berlin. Many poets and architects of the 19th century allowed themselves to be inspired in Italy and made the city on the Spree into an “Italian enclave”. This can still be sensed today. The densely rowed series of richly decorated facades, rattling Vespas and the many espresso bars evoke an Italian feeling. Only one thing is still missing: the Fellini, a luxurious block of apartments with an Italian way of life. It closes a gap, architecturally, historically and culturally. In its shape and colour, its appearance is reminiscent of elegant Italian townhouses. The curved court façade is inspired by the auditorium of a theatre. In its centre, there stands a splendid stone fountain. The inhabitants are participants in this atmosphere and enjoy the relaxed Italian charm of their surroundings. The quality and first- class location of this property also provides relaxation – it promises a high increase in value in one of the most dynamic property markets in Europe.”

The Research Station is commissioned by SKULPTURENPARK BERLIN_ZENTRUM for their project Wunderland. The station can be found on the open ground between Seydelstr and Beuthstr
